South Grove Primary School

Overarching Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement

Our ambitious curriculum aims to enable all children to flourish in their academic and personal development and prepare them for lifelong learning. It exposes our children to enriching experiences, immersing them in progressive knowledge, skills and critical thinking; equipping them with personal characteristics and values required to succeed in life. Our curriculum is created with purpose and taught with passion, so that our children thrive as reflective and responsible, respectful and resilient learners.

It promotes a deep and progressive understanding of knowledge, skills and critical thinking, underpinned by developing children’s oracy skills, from the start of their educational journey.

Intent

The intent of South Grove Primary School is to provide all pupils with a rich and robust curriculum. South Grove is a highly inclusive school situated in a culturally diverse area, focussing on the well-being and progress of every child and where all members of our community are of equal worth.

We have high expectations of all learners and ensure that they achieve the very best that they can be, to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers and empowered global learners within the curriculum designed to help them know who they are in the world.

Our curriculum is designed and delivered with a strong commitment to all children, where every child is recognised as a unique individual. We celebrate inclusion and welcome these differences within our school community. With a focused pupil premium strategy, we ensure our disadvantaged pupils have the essential support, opportunity and access so they can develop academically. We adapt and design our curriculum carefully to ensure access for SEND pupils to gain the knowledge and skills they need.

As a school we continue to learn, innovate and contribute to building an inclusive community and implement a highly representative curriculum.

Philosophy

At South Grove we are proud of our values-based curriculum that incorporates the skills and content of the National Curriculum within the International Primary Curriculum for our context and our community.

The breadth of the curriculum is designed to allow children to master knowledge and skills, in all subjects, both core and foundation. It exposes our children to enriching experiences, immersing them in a curriculum that is coherently planned and sequenced, progressive in knowledge and skills; equipping them with personal characteristics and values required to succeed in life.

The curriculum provides a clear progression model, supporting the layering of new knowledge and skills on secure foundations which are recapped.

Subjects are taught discretely, so that both the knowledge and skills of the subject can be explicitly learnt. When appropriate, links are made between subjects to deepen children’s understanding.

The curriculum for each subject is carefully planned, resourced and taught ensuring high levels of challenge and expectations for all learners.

In order to ensure our curriculum is current, relevant and inspiring, we enrich learning through varied resources, experiences with a range of educators, expert organisations, future employers and creative networks.

Our teachers are committed and confident about curriculum implementation and innovation. As empowering educators, we use our knowledge of Visible Learning, Solo Taxonomy, Academic Resilience, and Positive Behaviour Systems to promote positive attitudes and independent learning strategies.

This allows the children the opportunity to reflect the values and skills needed to promote their responsibility and ownership of learning, future success and an understanding of what it means to be an empathic global learner.

The school constantly provides enhancement opportunities to engage learning and believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time in their lives where there are no limits to curiosity and a thirst for new experiences and knowledge. To deliver a robust and topical curriculum that goes beyond the experiences of the classroom to ensure that our children are exposed to the richest and most varied opportunities that we can provide.
