Year Five & Six Take Part in the Mini Tour De Waltham Forest
On Tuesday 9th June, seven of our oldest and most experienced cyclists went to Leyton Jubilee Park to take part in the borough’s cycling event: Mini Tour De Waltham Forest.
Before any races, the children took part in many different activities using pedal powered technology such as: Cycle Boombox and Cycle Smoothies. In addition, the children experienced a session on bike maintenance.
The children then took part in a warm up lap followed by a race involving their peers. They were then placed into groups, ranked 1-7.
A little while later and the races began! I waited nervously at the start/finish line with Ms Montgomery and the rest of the team scattered around the track to offer words – and screams- of encouragement. Below is their individual placing:

After lots of drama, the children sat exhausted in the afternoon sun waiting to hear where South Grove had placed. We knew Jacob had won the fastest individual of the day but had no idea where we placed as a team.
As the schools were read out in order, the children waited patiently. Third place was awarded to Newport, second place was awarded to Gwyn Jones and then there was dead silence as we had assumed we didn’t even manage to rank this year. Suddenly, our name was called out! We had won! We had managed to reclaim our Gold title, making us the most successful school in Waltham Forest for cycling as we have received bronze, silver or gold every single year since the Mini Tour de Waltham Forest started!
We collected our trophy and had our photo taken by the council. The trophy can be seen alongside our others in the library. Keep an eye out for us in the local paper.
