Wednesday 8 July 2026 Year Four's Shadow Boxes Our Year 4 designers have been incredibly busy this week constructing spectacular shadow boxes. Each box beautifully reflects their learning about different world religions, showcasing symbols, stories, and sacred spaces using intricate layers and cut-outs. When illuminated, the interplay of light and silhouette brings their knowledge to life in a truly magical way. Year 4 brought the classic board game to life this week in a high-energy PE lesson! The school hall was filled with laughter and cheers as the children worked in teams to collect as many colorful balls as possible. One student lay flat on a wheeled scooter board, acting as the "hippo," while their teammate held their legs to steer them into the chaos. Armed with plastic baskets, the children zipped across the floor, frantically trapping balls and pulling them back to their bases. It was a fantastic, fast-paced session that truly tested their teamwork, communication and speed. The kids absolutely loved it!

Wednesday 1 July 2026 Year 5 Adventure at Herts Young Mariners Base Year 5 had an unforgettable adventure at Herts Young Mariners Base in Cheshunt this week, where they took to the water for a day of canoeing, bell boating and stand-up paddleboarding. It was wonderful to see so many children step outside their comfort zones and face their fears on the water. Whether it was the first time holding a paddle or balancing on a stand-up paddleboard, every child showed incredible resilience and determination. By the end of the day, everyone had tried all three activities – and yes, everyone got wet!The children's behaviour throughout the day was exemplary, showing great teamwork as they worked together in their boats and supported each other to try new things.

Thursday 25 June 2026 Year Four Explore Electricity In Year 4, as part of our science work this half term, we have been learning about electricity and how it powers circuits. We have begun to design our shadow boxes which will eventually use electrical components and circuits which to power a light to go into a box (which we are going to make). Our boxes are inspired by all of the religions we have been learning about in our RE topic ‘Why do some people see life as a journey?'Ms Lovell-Young

Tuesday 16 June 2026 Quad Kids - KS1 - Summer 2026 South Grove was represented in style at Quad Kids this week by some excellent sporting attitudes from Year 1 and Year 2. Long Jump, Howler throw, 50m and even 300m couldn't deter our champs from trying their best and demonstrating exactly the responsible and resilient attitudes we develop at South Grove. From our Year 1's battling it out into 1st, 2nd, and 4th place in their heats of the 300 metres long run, to excelling in their sprint rounds. We even had a throw of the day from Theo in Year 2 who managed an incredible 60 meters throw. Flynn and Eric were mentioned as having run especially fast rounds of 300m managing 2nd and 1st place respectively. As Flynn said; it was neck and neck. Also impressive, we finished all the events we took part in showing real grit and determination despite a pretty hot day. Quad Kids: we couldn't be prouder of you!!

Friday 12 June 2026 Year Three Walk to School During Walk to School Week, Year 3 carried out a simple wildlife survey by observing pollinators around the school grounds. The children discussed what could be added to the school environment to attract more pollinator, such as wildflowers and insect-friendly habitats. We also explored how everyday streets can either support or harm pollinators and considered how choosing to walk, scoot, wheel or cycle can help create a healthier environment. Through these activities, the children developed a greater understanding of the important role pollinators play in our ecosystem, and how sustainable travel choices can benefit both wildlife and people.

The children were able to recap their understanding of the geocentric and heliocentric models of the solar system, as well as the important work of Galileo and how his discoveries changed our view of the universe. The show also introduced us to new and exciting scientific ideas. We learned about the vacuum of space through a series of engaging demonstrations, including a memorable experiment involving Mr Potato Head! The children also discovered how solar energy can be used to power spacecraft and explored some of the challenges astronauts face when travelling and living in space.Throughout the day, the children were enthusiastic, curious and eager to learn. Tuesday 2 June 2026 Year Six are Bee Friendly! As part of Walk to School Week this year, Year 6 has been learning about what makes a street bee-friendly. A bee-friendly street is a healthy street with fewer cars and more flowers, making it safer for children to walk, scoot and cycle to school while also creating important habitats for bees and other pollinators. To share what we know, Year 6 designed colourful bee-friendly posters to encourage others to think about how they travel to school and how they can help pollinators. We also created our own pledges, promising to take actions such as walking or scooting more often, planting flowers for bees, and helping to keep our environment clean and healthy.

Thursday 14 May 2026 Year Four Multiply their way to Success The Year 4 team are incredibly proud of our fantastic pupils, who have been demonstrating outstanding dedication and enthusiasm as they prepare for the upcoming Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). Their hard work, resilience, and determination to master their times tables have been truly inspiring to see across both classrooms. As a reminder, the official MTC assessments will take place this June. Please continue supporting your children by practising their times tables at home daily in whatever format they prefer. You can also use timestables.co.uk and https://web.emile-education.com/. Going through them every day will help the children build the speed and confidence they need to achieve the very best results they can!

Thursday 7 May 2026 Year Four Explore Greek Literature Year 4 have been continuing their studies of ancient Greece by taking a deep dive into Greek literature. We learnt what comedies, tragedies and satires are and practiced our best facial expressions to go alongside these genres. Then we learnt about Sophocles and the role of a playwright in Athenian culture and then we spilt into 3 different groups with different groups to act out a play from each genre only using our hand gestures and masks - just like the Greeks! Wednesday 6 May 2026 Year Three See the Light In Science, we have been studying light. One of our lessons has been about sun safety and understanding that the UV rays coming from the sun are what cause damage to our skin. It is very important that when you are out in the sun, you protect yourself with sunglasses (with UV protection), a hat, protective clothing, and sunscreen — the higher the SPF, the better. It is also VERY important that we do not look directly at the sun, as that will damage our eyes. To help us look at the sun more safely, we created pinhole cameras to project a shadow onto a piece of paper.

Friday 1 May 2026 Year Three get Volcanic! This week, we finished our unit on volcanoes by completing a synoptic task. For this assignment, we drew Mount Etna and included surrounding details such as farms, tourists, scientists, and geologists. After finishing our drawings, we labelled the different activities taking place. For example, we showed geologists collecting lava samples and scientists traveling over the volcano to monitor signs of a potential eruption, such as temperature changes or the crater growing in size. We also wrote about how tourists visit volcanoes for activities like hiking and skiing. We have thoroughly enjoyed our lessons about volcanoes!

Monday 20 April 2026 Year Four's Spy Dance Last week, Year 4 continued their new dance topic, exploring interpretive dance and how dance can describe characters and stories without words. We have been focusing on acting like sneaky spies, using different levels and movements such as rolling across the floor and hiding actions. We started the lesson by recapping how to count beats in songs using our own spy-themed tunes. We then worked in pairs to create action-and-reaction routines, demonstrating how we can use a variety of movements to create exciting, action-packed choreography. Examples of the movements we used include tilting while our partners leaned, pushing and falling, and spinning around one another.Once we had finished creating our choreography, we performed to another pair to receive feedback on our unison, timing, and dynamics.
